Hello,

I am Juliana Winchester

I am currently a student at Mesa College. My most important passion is learning about current problems with the environment and finding solutions. How this connects with me as a scholar is by conducting studies with research!

Life before Mesa College

I have been at Mesa College since 2019 starting at the San Diego MET High School. I thought the MET would be the perfect school to get a jump start into college. Every semester I was able to participate in the internship program. I also took two Mesa Classes. I graduated in June of 2023 with Honors!

An accomplishment that I had was having A's in the majority of my classes. In my interpersonal communication class, I had the highest grade! Another major accomplishment was that I became less shy and have had no anxieties while attending college. I would raise my hand and ask/answer questions. I'd never thought I would do this a year ago!

Pictured is my interpersonal communication professor.

A setback I recently had was taking too many classes. I originally started out with five and that started to take a toll on my grades and added stress. I withdrew from my chemistry and lab. Another setback was not passing my pre-algebra class. Math has never been a strong subject for me. I was engaging in class by answering questions but, I ended up needing to take the class again.

To be successful I will take fewer classes. I have a two-year education plan so now I know the pace I will be going. This spring semester I have the goal of going to the library more often because it is distraction free. I will also go to office hours for my math class and go to the STEM center if I need additional help.

Making a Difference

Two career paths sound interesting to me. One career path would be working for the Environmental Protection Agency. To me, this seems like the highest place I can go to create the most impact. Another option my former English professor mentioned is working as a researcher at a university. This would be perfect because I love to do research.

Looking at my two-year education plan, I found out I might be at Mesa for 3-4 years. For STEM students it not unusual to stay for 3 years. After that, I want to transfer to San Diego State University. During my summer Personal Growth class both my professors inspired me to get a doctoral degree. I learned that I could get my doctoral degree with San Diego State through a partnership program with UCSD.

To make a difference in this world I want to have a career that aligns with my values. Ever since I was younger, I have always wanted the Earth to be free of pollution. By trying my best in school and working hard I can make this a reality!
